Religious Education at John Wilkinson inspires curiosity, deep thinking and a sense of wonder about the diverse religious and non-religious traditions that shape our world.

Through thoughtful and inclusive teaching, Religious Education provokes important and challenging questions about the meaning and purpose of life. It develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding of Christianity and a range of world religions, while also recognising and respecting non-religious worldviews.

Children are encouraged to explore and reflect on their own beliefs and values, as well as those of others, developing empathy, understanding, and a genuine respect for the rich diversity within our local community and the wider world. Our RE lessons are a space for open dialogue, where children are taught to listen carefully, think deeply, and celebrate the beliefs, cultures and traditions that make up our global society.

Our Vision

Through Religious Education, our children will:

• Make sense of a range of religious and non-religious beliefs
• Understand the impact and significance of those beliefs in the lives of individuals and communities
• Make connections between religious and non-religious concepts, practices and ideas
• Ask and explore challenging questions about identity, meaning and purpose

RE is taught weekly in every year group, with each class exploring 5–6 carefully chosen units over the year. Lessons are inclusive, engaging and thought-provoking, providing a safe space for children to explore and develop their understanding.

Celebrating Religious Education

We aim to broaden children’s understanding of the world beyond Broseley by:

• Organising trips to a range of places of worship, allowing pupils to experience different faiths first-hand
• Welcoming visitors from a variety of religious and cultural backgrounds to lead whole-school and class assemblies
• Regularly inviting community members to share their personal stories about what makes their culture or religion special to them, creating enriching and authentic experiences for our pupils
• Encouraging parents and carers to attend assemblies and accompany trips to meet different faith leaders and communities
• Celebrating key religious festivals from different faiths through themed weeks, storytelling, art, music, drama and dance
• Providing opportunities for children to learn through creative and immersive experiences that bring world religions to life
