At John Wilkinson Primary School and Nursery, our PSHE and RSE curriculum equips children with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to thrive in modern life. Through the structured and age-appropriate 1Decision programme, we promote personal, social, health, and economic development using engaging, interactive lessons. Our aim is to help every child develop confidence, resilience, emotional literacy, and the ability to make informed decisions—ensuring they are well-prepared for life beyond primary school.

PSHE is taught weekly using the 1Decision programme, which includes interactive videos, real-life scenarios, and decision-making activities. Embedding PSHE Across the Curriculum
PSHE themes are woven throughout the wider curriculum. For example, pupils explore physical and mental health in science, equality and rights in history, and online safety in computing. This cross-curricular approach reinforces the relevance of PSHE in everyday life.

Picture News – Encouraging Open Dialogue at School and Home
Each week, Picture News introduces a current news story alongside a thought-provoking question to spark meaningful discussion. These sessions take place in class and are also shared with families through home learning resources, encouraging children to reflect on and explore important issues with parents and carers.

The programme promotes a deeper understanding of British Values – democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance – as well as the protected characteristics outlined in the Equality Act. Children explore topics such as equality, diversity, discrimination, and inclusion in a safe and age-appropriate way, helping them develop into thoughtful, informed citizens both in and outside of school.

Relationships and Health Education at John Wilkinson Primary School

At John Wilkinson Primary School, we are committed to supporting our children’s personal development, emotional wellbeing, and readiness for the wider world. As part of this commitment, we teach Relationships and Health Education  through the highly regarded 1Decision programme, ensuring our curriculum meets all statutory requirements and is tailored to the needs of our pupils.

How We Deliver RSHE Using 1Decision

The 1Decision programme offers a rich and interactive learning experience for our children. It uses real-life video scenarios with alternative endings, allowing pupils to explore the consequences of different choices in a safe and thoughtful way. This approach encourages critical thinking, discussion, and reflection, helping children to develop essential life skills.

Our RSHE curriculum is structured across a series of engaging modules, including:

• Relationships and growing up
• Feelings and emotions
• Keeping safe and healthy
• Online safety
• Being responsible
• A world without judgement

Each module builds on prior knowledge and is tailored to suit the developmental stages of the children, ensuring that all topics are delivered in an age-appropriate, sensitive, and inclusive manner.

The content of our RSHE curriculum is carefully mapped to the Department for Education’s statutory guidance and the PSHE Association Programme of Study. Lessons are planned with flexibility, enabling teachers to adapt resources to meet the specific needs, backgrounds, and maturity levels of their classes while maintaining high standards of inclusivity and respect.

Supporting Families and the Wider School Community

We value strong partnerships with parents, carers, and governors in supporting children’s development. 1Decision provides a dedicated Parent and Carer Zone:  Parent/carer Zone: RSHE and PSHE Support and Guidance , giving families access to high-quality resources to help continue meaningful conversations at home.

We also welcome ongoing dialogue with parents and governors about how RSHE is taught, ensuring our approach remains transparent, respectful, and aligned with our shared values as a school community.
